A variety of different systems for mounting the single sheets have been developed, most of them use a cable to raise and tension the poster, but they vary in finishing requirements. Some will still require a pocket hem while others will only need to be trimmed to size.
The list of substrates available for creating this paperless poster is ever changing. Each material has different printing requirements and recycling abilities. The following materials are being used today:
> Polyethylene (PE)
> Polypropylene (PP)
> Vinyl (PVC)
Polyethylene is currently the most developed product. It can be printed with both solvent and UV inks. When solvent inks are used, the material has to be pre-coated to achieve an acceptable level of quality. Currently the uncoated polyethylene requires the use of UV Inks, but some ink companies are testing new ink sets that will work in a solvent machine. The most common digital printers used today use solvent inks, but there are a growing number of UV printers available.
Polyethylene is recyclable at most plastics recycling plants, making it one of the most environmentally friendly products.

Vinyl is the standard product used to produce 14x48 billboards, so it is a proven product. The new lightweight versions are 5 - 8 oz. as opposed to the normal 13 oz. used for billboards. The vinyl product we use is from Cooley, and they have the capability (logistics) to take-back used billboard materials (post consumer) and recycle them.
The recycled materials are incorporated back into either:
Cooley Roofing Products, or Cooley Digital Products, which are produced by a partner who converts into products such as garden hose and like products.
Now that we have updated you on the industry, lets talk about Kubin-Nicholson’s abilities:
| > |
We utilize both solvent and UV presses |
| > |
We have the capability to print on PE and PVC |
| > |
We can finish the edges of either material to accommodate the different mounting systems |
| > |
Kubin will continue to print on paper as needed |
